Don’t wait until it is too late – your trees and shrubs need protection. Winter is harsh. Even the during the mildest winter your trees and shrubs can be devastated. The cold winds, extreme temperatures, heavy snow and weather affect your trees more than you would think. It is extremely important to take the steps necessary to ensure they do not endure any damage through the cold season. Anti desiccants are an easy way to help prevent damage to your trees and shrubs throughout the winter season.
What It Is
Anti desiccants, also called anti transpirants, are chemical compounds that when applied to trees and shrubs, can help reduce water loss from plants. Most anti desiccants are organic and biodegradable. The chemical is applied by using tree spraying on the foliage of the trees/shrubs and should be reapplied more than once through the winter months. Warm spells during the winter can cause trees and shrubs to lose more water, so additional applications could be necessary. The compound creates a protective barrier that slows the process of transpiration. Anti desiccants can also be beneficial during summer months when a tree cannot keep up with the amount of water lost.
Why It’s Important
Anti desiccants are important to the vitality of your trees/shrubs and can prevent a number of different problems that come with cold weather. Winter burn is one of the most common problems that arise throughout the winter. Browning and scorching of the trees leaf/needle tips are a sign of winter burn. Winter burn is caused by lack of water and occurs when the roots cannot keep up with the amount of water lost. During the winter months, dry winds and winter sun dry the trees out. Due to the freezing temps, water is not able to move up from the roots of the trees through and into the stems. Anti desiccants help to prevent the tree from drying out and keep your trees looking as beautiful as ever.
Anti desiccants can also be used for a number of different things. My two favorite alternate applications for anti desiccants are used during October and December. Apply a little bit of anti desiccant to your jack-o-lantern to ensure that it lasts a little longer than most. You can also apply anti desiccant to your cut Christmas tree to keep it from drying out as fast.
